Raleigh, NC –  Ilya Kovalchuk led an offensive attack with a goal and two assists, as the New Jersey Devils locked up a playoff spot with a 5-0 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes.

Petr Sykora had a goal and an assist for the Devils, who are back in the postseason after having a string of 13 straight trips to the playoffs snapped last season.

Kentucky tops Louisville to earn title shot
Apr 1st 2012, 00:23

New Orleans, LA –  Kentucky bent, but never broke, and John Calipari earned bragging rights over Rick Pitino.

The Wildcats might not be the only team in Kentucky, but they are the only one still standing.

Anthony Davis had 18 points and 14 rebounds and Kentucky earned a spot in the national championship game with a 69-61 victory over in-state rival Louisville in the Final Four on Saturday.

Kentucky moved on to Monday's title game against either Kansas or Ohio State, who were playing Saturday's late game at the Superdome.

Wojcik named head coach at CofC
Apr 1st 2012, 00:21

Charleston, SC –  The College of Charleston on Saturday named Doug Wojcik head men's basketball coach.

Wojcik comes to the Cougars from Tulsa, where he compiled a program-record 140 wins over seven seasons. He averaged over 20 wins per season with the Golden Hurricane.

"We had strong candidates, and a difficult choice to make," said Charleston president George Benson. "But Doug Wojcik stood out. Doug has had success at every level throughout his career, as a player, an assistant, and a head coach."

Tulsa made two NIT appearances under the 47-year-old's tenure and won the inaugural College Basketball Invitational title in 2008.

"This is an exciting time for my family and me to be the head coach at the College of Charleston," Wojcik said. "It is a dream come true. It is a great job, in a great city with a great basketball history with Coach (John) Kresse and Coach (Bobby) Cremins as well as a great group of student-athletes coming back next season."

Prior to his stint at Tulsa, he was an assistant at Navy, Notre Dame, North Carolina and Michigan State. He reached a Final Four with the Spartans in 2005.

Sjodin joins Tseng in lead at Kraft Nabisco
Apr 1st 2012, 00:45

Rancho Mirage, CA –  Karin Sjodin battled the wind on Saturday to fire a four-under 68, which allowed her to join Yani Tseng in the lead after three rounds of the Kraft Nabisco Championship.

The co-leaders sit at nine-under-par 207 and couldn't be much different, career-wise.

Sjodin, 28, has never won on the LPGA Tour and missed the cut last week at the Kia Classic. She also missed the cut the first three times she played this tournament.

Tseng, 23, is the world's No. 1 player and a dominant presence on tour. She has recorded 15 LPGA victories, including five major wins -- one of which was the 2010 Kraft Nabisco title. She has won back-to-back tournaments, and three times in five starts overall this season.

But she struggled with her putter on the back nine Saturday and carded a one- under 71.

Now, she and Sjodin will head into Sunday equal on the leaderboard, both in good position to claim the victory at the season's first major. They are two strokes ahead of Haeji Kang (72).

World No. 2 Na Yeon Choi (71), Sun Young Yoo (72), Hee Kyung Seo (69), Eun-Hee Ji (70) and I.K. Kim (70) share fourth place at six-under 210.

Kentucky off to title game, beats Louisville 69-61
Apr 1st 2012, 00:40

NEW ORLEANS –  Player of the year Anthony Davis has Kentucky right where it expected to be, in the national title game, scoring 18 points and 14 rebounds as the Wildcats held off pesky Louisville 69-61 on Saturday night.

As the final seconds ticked down, Davis screamed at the crowd and pointed to the court as if to say, "This is our house."

Yes, yes it is.

Louisville (30-10) rallied from a 13-point deficit, tying the game at 49 on a 3-pointer from NBA range by Peyton Siva with 9:11 to play. But Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who played sparingly because of foul trouble, made back-to-back buckets to give the Wildcats some breathing room. Darius Miller then made a 3 -- Kentucky's second of the game -- to give the Wildcats control for good.

Kentucky (37-2) will play the winner of Kansas-Ohio State in Monday night's title game.

Oosthuizen leads Houston Open by 2
Apr 1st 2012, 00:46

Humble, TX –  Louis Oosthuizen birdied four of five holes on the back nine Saturday to move two clear of the field after three rounds of the Houston Open.

The 2010 British Open champion fired his second straight six-under 66 to finish 54 holes at 17-under-par 199. He missed the tournament's 54-hole scoring record by one stroke.

Oosthuizen's lone PGA Tour win was at the British Open. He has won four times over the last three years on the European Tour.

Hunter Mahan fired a seven-under 65 to jump into second place at minus-15. He claimed his second WGC earlier this year when he won the WGC - Accenture Match Play. That was this fourth PGA Tour title and first since winning the 2010 WGC - Bridgestone Invitational.

Brian Davis, who shared the second-round lead with Oosthuizen, carded a three- under 69 to join Carl Pettersson (67) in third place at 14-under-par 202. James Driscoll (71) is two strokes back at minus-12 on the Tournament Course at Redstone Golf Club.

Defending champion Phil Mickelson managed his second straight two-under 70 in round three. He stands alongside Ryan Palmer (66) and PGA Champion Keegan Bradley (69) in sixth place at 11-under-par 205.

The second round was completed earlier Saturday after a weather delay on Thursday pushed the tournament back. The event is back on schedule despite the fact that 90 players made the cut after two rounds.

Outside of the majors, the 1981 Travelers Championship was the only other time more than 90 players made the 36-hole cut.

FOXNews.com: Griner and Mulkey give Baylor sweep of AP Awards

Griner and Mulkey give Baylor sweep of AP Awards
Mar 31st 2012, 23:30

DENVER –  Whether emphatically blocking shots or throwing down dunks on the other the end of the floor, Brittney Griner has been the most dominant player in women's basketball this season.

The 6-foot-8 junior phenom has led Baylor to a perfect record and the Lady Bears stand two wins away from becoming the first team in NCAA history to win 40 games in a season. Now she is The Associated Press player of the year. Her coach Kim Mulkey completed a Baylor sweep of the awards, being selected coach of the year.

"It's an honor," said Griner, who became the first Baylor player to win the award. "We have a great year going and for it to be the perfect season for me, we've got to win the national championship."

The two-time All-American got 36 of the votes from the 40-member national media panel that selects the weekly Top 25. Delaware's Elena Delle Donne received two votes while Notre Dame's Skylar Diggins and Stanford's Nnemkadi Ogwumike got the other ones.

Mulkey, who won the award for the first time, received 19 votes. Tina Martin of Delaware was second with 14. Jim Crowley of St. Bonaventure got three votes and Kim Barnes-Arico of St. John's, Matt Bollant, who coached Wisconsin-Green Bay this season before recently taking the Illinois job, Muffet McGraw of Notre Dame and Katie Meier of Miami each got one vote.

"I'm honored, but truthfully, I'm only as good as the kids I get to coach," Mulkey said. "I'm blessed they are on my team, they make you look good."

Mulkey knew it was going to be a special year for her team the moment Griner texted her after a loss in the NCAA regional finals last season.

"She was the only kid that texted me within an hour of the loss," Mulkey said. "She said she was sorry that she didn't deliver. When you have a kid as talented as she is, you knew she was going to come back an even better player. She's stronger, she's forceful. She's dominant."

Griner averaged 23.4 points, 9.4 rebounds and 5.2 blocks this season. She shot 61 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free throw line. And she has raised her game over the last month.

Griner wowed the nation becoming the second women's player ever to dunk in the NCAA tournament with a one-handed jam in the second-round win over Florida. She took it a step further in the next game with a two-handed slam on the fast break.

"The first one, I didn't plan on dunking it," Griner said. "It caught me off guard that I did it. The second one, yeah I knew beforehand I was going to try. I'm so focused right now on getting the win and moving on to the next game. I'll celebrate it later. It was definitely great though."

She has been more aggressive this season rarely taking plays off, something she learned while playing on the U.S. national team's European training tour in late September. She was the only college player in the group, and potentially could be the only collegian on the Olympic team this summer.

U.S. coach Geno Auriemma sensed a masterpiece in the making.

"Who carved out the statue of 'David', Michaelangelo?" he said. "She's got a chance to be that down the road. Right now there's a lot of uncarved away stuff because she's so young. There's things she does that no one else can do. I've never seen anyone do things she can do. All the things she can't do it's because she hasn't had the experience to do them yet. The more she's put in that situation I think her growth is going to be exponential. She's going to take off."

Griner wasn't one of the 11 players unveiled Friday to make the Olympic team, but there is still one spot open and it's potentially hers.
