Murray, Tsonga, Ferrer march on in France
May 31st 2012, 13:26

Paris, France –  Three-time Grand Slam runner-up Andy Murray, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and David Ferrer were among Thursday's second-round winners at the French Open.

The fourth-seeded Murray, who lost to Rafael Nadal in his first-ever French Open semifinal here a year ago, defeated Jarkko Nieminen 1-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Murray has now reached the third round here for the fifth consecutive year. He will next do battle with Santiago Giraldo, who defeated 25th-seeded Bernard Tomic 6-4, 6-1, 6-3.

Tsonga, the No. 5 seed, completed a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory over German Cedrik-Marcel Stebe after their match was suspended because of rain on Wednesday.

The sixth-seeded Ferrer of Spain cruised past Frenchman Benoit Paire 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 to secure a spot in the third round here for the eighth consecutive year.

Nadal, who is in action against Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin, is 46-1 lifetime at Roland Garros, including an Open-Era-record-tying six titles. He's currently the reigning two-time champ, including a victory over his great rival Roger Federer in last year's finale.

Kvitova reaches third round in Paris
May 31st 2012, 13:26

Paris, France –  Reigning Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova was a second-round winner Thursday at the 2012 French Open.

Kvitova, the No. 4 seed, handled Urszula Radwanska of Poland 6-1, 6-3 in 70 minutes on Court Suzanne Lenglen at Stade Roland Garros.

The Czech denied Maria Sharapova a second Wimbledon crown in last year's finale at the All England Club for her first career Grand Slam title and is trying to better her fourth-round result from last year in Paris.

Another Czech, Klara Zakopalova, took down 16th-seeded Russian glamour girl Maria Kirilenko 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, while 22nd-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia beat Melinda Czink of Hungary 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Sharapova and defending French Open champion Li Na will play later Thursday. Sharapova is set to take on Ayumi Morita of Japan, while Li will play Stephanie Foretz Gacon of France.

FOXNews.com: Israeli windsurfer Lee Korzits preps for London

Israeli windsurfer Lee Korzits preps for London
May 31st 2012, 13:59

MICHMORET, Israel –  Lee Korzits grew up at a humble water sports school north of Tel Aviv, where stacks of surfboards stand next to low-slung rusty tin shacks.

It's an unlikely training ground for a three-time world champion and Israel's best hope for an Olympic gold medal in windsurfing, but it's home.

"I like it like this," Korzits said. "You should have seen it when it was all shipping containers and sand."

The 28-year-old Korzits has been in the final weeks of training before heading to London to compete in the RS:X windsurfing competition. It will be her second Olympics, and her first return to the games since two debilitating accidents in the water.

Through all the setbacks, it's the sport she loves

"All your body works," she said. "It's not like sailing where you sit in a boat. You just use your body to be a steering wheel."

Korzits grew up in the small town of Hofit, from the Hebrew word for coast. She moved to the neighboring seaside town of Michmoret when she was in grade school and began taking windsurfing lessons at the community's water sports club. Her father was a lifeguard, her mother a swimmer and her older brother a windsurfer. She said she felt an immediate connection to the water, and soon excelled at local and international races.

"I feel the water in my veins," Korzits said. "I get a silence on the water that I cannot get on land."

In 2003, a 19-year-old Korzits became the youngest world champion in Cadiz, Spain. A year later she competed at the Athens Olympics, coming in 13th place.

But after her initial successes, Korzits' luck changed.

During a 2009 photo shoot in Hawaii, another surfer crashed into her. The accident snapped two ribs from her spine. Doctors told her she might never sail again.

But she defied expectations and through a steady regimen of physical therapy and swimming, returned to the sea. She said she learned to train around her "floating ribs," held in place only by muscle.

Then in 2010, Korzits nearly drowned in Poland when a competitor knocked her off her board at the European Championships. Although it was painful, Korzits said she learned to value her sport more once she was bedridden.

"I thought about how much I love windsurfing and how good it is to be healthy," she said. "All my life I am surfing, and suddenly I was stuck in a place without it."

She won another world championship in Perth in 2011, and defended her title in Cadiz in March. Her comeback from injury to more world titles led to invitations to give motivational speeches about grit and determination.

But it's on the beach that Korzits is in her element.

Sinewy and strong, she hoists her windsurf board above her head and lays it at the water's edge. Then she examines her sail, a large clear fin edged in red, and grouses over a dent formed in the sail by a careless member of the club. She hooks the sail to the board and climbs on, standing with a steady balance despite gentle waves.

Nearby in a motorboat is Ben Finkelstein, Korzits' coach. He whoops every 30 seconds, when she pumps with her body to keep the sail rippling in low winds. During breaks, Korzits chugs water flavored with a sprig of peppermint that she plucked from a planter by the sailing club's water fountain.

According to Finkelstein, the adversity that Korzits has overcome has given her a deep appreciation for the sport and for her accomplishments.

"She understands more, loves it more and enjoys every minute," Finkelstein said. "That's what helps her win."

Windsurfing is an Israeli specialty. Gal Friedman won Israel's first gold medal in Athens, as well as bronze at the 1996 Atlanta Games. Shahar Zubari earned bronze in Beijing four years ago and is competing for a spot in London with Nimrod Mashiah.

"Israel is a country everyone thinks is only war and problems," Korzits said. "We go to the Olympic Games to represent our country and show we have something else."

In London, Korzits will have to face different conditions than what she is used to on the Mediterranean Sea. She excels in strong wind and usually trains in warm water, but she said she has visited London several times recently to acclimate to the cold water and different wind patterns.

She expects to face rivals Zofia Noceti-Klepacka of Poland and Marina Alabau of Spain at the games. But outside the water, the three are close friends. In October 2011, Korzits and Noceti-Klepacka got matching tattoos on their right arms in Israel.

"We come to fight on the water," Korzits said, "and be friends on the beach."

Nadal advances to 3rd round at French Open
May 31st 2012, 13:58

PARIS –  Rafael Nadal improved his record at the French Open to 47-1, advancing to the third round Thursday by beating Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan 6-2, 6-2, 6-0.

Nadal has won the French Open title six times, and one more will break the record he shares with Bjorn Borg.

The second-seeded Spaniard's only loss at the clay-court Grand Slam came in 2009, when he lost to Robin Soderling in the fourth round.

Overall, Nadal has won 10 Grand Slam titles, including at least one at each of the four majors.

Euro 2012 train tickets, schedules in fan phones
May 31st 2012, 12:16

WARSAW, Poland –  Poland's transport minister says that those travelling during next month's Euro 2012 football championship will be able to check train schedules and buy tickets using their cell phones.

Minister Slawomir Nowak said Thursday that users of phones will be able to download train travel information and purchase tickets at station in tournament's cities: Warsaw, Wroclaw, Gdansk, Poznan and Krakow.

A website in Polish, English and Russian, kolejna2012.pl, will help them use the system and will offer other travel guidance.

A special train connection has opened between Warsaw's Frederic Chopin airport, the city center and the National Stadium, where the tournament, co-hosted by Ukraine, will kick off June 8.

But an alternative airport, in nearby Modlin, will not be ready on time.

Petra Kvitova reaches 3rd round at French Open
May 31st 2012, 11:08

PARIS –  Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova reached the third round of the French Open by beating Urszula Radwanska of Poland 6-1, 6-3 Thursday.

The fourth-seeded Czech was never really tested on Court Suzanne Lenglen, saving all three break points she faced.

Kvitova secured her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon last year, and then won the WTA Championships. Although she has yet to win a title in 2012, she is seeded fourth in Paris and is expected to go deep into the tournament.

Radwanska is the younger sister of third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska, who reached the third round on Wednesday by beating seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams.

Later Thursday, second-seeded Maria Sharapova was to face Ayumi Morita of Japan, and defending champion Li Na was to play Stephanie Foretz Gacon of France. Also, defending men's champion Rafael Nadal was scheduled to play Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan. Nadal is looking for a record-breaking seventh title at Roland Garros.

For Roger Federer, setting records on the tennis court is becoming ho-hum.

The perks that come with them, like dining with Queen Elizabeth II, are the things to really remember.

"Yes, I have had lunch next to the queen — with the queen, basically," Federer said. "Big honor, obviously ... Thank God, she came."

Federer beat Adrian Ungur of Romania 6-3, 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-3 in the second round Tuesday. With the win, the 16-time Grand Slam champion broke a record he shared with Jimmy Connors for most career victories at major tournaments in the Open era, which began in 1968. He is now 234-35 in tennis' top four tournaments, an .870 winning percentage.

But he was less than his dominant self, wasting two match points in the third set before losing the tiebreaker.

"Instead of being aggressive, I let him show me what he could do," Federer said. "He played two beautiful shots, and then I started not playing very well."

Novak Djokovic also advanced to the third round, as did top-seeded Victoria Azarenka of Belarus.

Kvitova safely through in Paris
May 31st 2012, 10:31

Czech fourth seed Petra Kvitova strolled into the French Open third round with a comprehensive 6-1 6-3 win over Pole Urszula Radwanska on Thursday.

Kvitova, who had only dropped three games in her opening round, was never threatened by the world number 79, hitting 30 winners in a one-sided match on Court Suzanne Lenglen.

The Wimbledon champion ended Radwanska's misery after 70 minutes on her second match point when the Pole sent a backhand long.

Kvitova, heading towards a possible quarter-final clash with defending champion Li Na of China, will next face Frenchwoman Claire Feuerstein or Russian Nina Bratchikova.
