Lincecum gets no-decision in 6-5 Giants loss
Jun 6th 2012, 06:09

SAN DIEGO –  The good news for Tim Lincecum is he didn't get the loss. The bad news is that the San Francisco Giants are 2-10 in his starts this season.

Logan Forsythe hit his first major league home run leading off the ninth inning to lift the San Diego Padres to a 6-5 victory against the Giants on Tuesday night.

Forsythe hit a 1-0 pitch from Steve Edlefsen (0-1) into the second deck in left field.

Huston Street (1-0), who came off the disabled list earlier in the day, pitched the ninth for the win, escaping a bases-loaded jam when Buster Posey hit into a force play.

San Diego's Carlos Quentin hit his first two home runs at Petco Park, giving him five since coming off the disabled list last week.

Lincecum appeared to have earned his first victory since April 28 before Jeremy Affeldt allowed Quentin's shot to straightaway center with one out in the eighth to tie the game at 5.

Lincecum is winless in seven starts, including three no-decisions and four losses. The Giants had rallied from a 4-0 deficit to take a 5-4 lead in the seventh, when Lincecum was lifted for pinch-hitter Aubrey Huff. Brandon Crawford singled to center, stole second and scored the go-ahead run on Theriot's two-out single to right.

"As a starter, your job is to put your team in a position to win," Lincecum said. "Up until now, I haven't been doing that. I'm definitely going to make that my focal point for how every man months we have left."

The Padres had runners on first and second with no outs in the seventh before former teammate Clay Hensley retired the side, including two strikeouts.

Theriot had three hits and three RBIs, while Gregor Blanco had three hits.

Lincecum allowed four runs and five hits in six innings, struck out eight and walked one. He is 0-4 with three no-decisions and a 5.90 ERA in seven starts since April 28.

The Padres jumped on Lincecum for four runs in the second, including Quentin's leadoff homer to deep left. Chase Headley followed with a double and scored on Everth Cabrera's one-out single. Cameron Maybin had a two-out, broken-bat double with two outs.

"One inning he was flat. I told him to get the ball down," manager Bruce Bochy said. "He settled down and pitched great. He had the one hiccup there. I thought it was impressive the way he regrouped and pitched well after that."

That lead was gone by the sixth.

Blanco tripled leading off the Giants' third and scored on Theriot's single to left. The Giants then scored three runs in the sixth to tie it. Theriot doubled in Blanco, advanced when Melky Cabrera beat out a bunt for a single and scored on Buster Posey's sacrifice fly. Angel Pagan singled to chase starter Anthony Bass and Brandon Belt greeted hit a sacrifice fly off Andrew Casher.

Bass allowed four runs and seven hits in 5 1-3 innings, struck out four and walked one.

NOTES: Street was reinstated from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday and RHP Miles Mikolas was optioned to Triple-A Tucson. Street was placed on the DL May 5 with a strained right lat muscle. In two rehabilitation starts for Class-A Lake Elsinore, he posted a 9.00 ERA. Mikolas made his major league debut on May 5. In 13 relief outings he was 1-1 with a 3.29 ERA. ... The three-game series continues Wednesday with a matchup of lefties between San Francisco's Madison Bumgarner (6-4, 3.04) and

Rockies routed 10-0 by Diamondbacks
Jun 6th 2012, 06:13

PHOENIX –  Jeremy Guthrie was worried about his place in the big leagues after his worst road start of the season. His manager isn't ready to take the ball from him yet.

Guthrie (3-4) allowed seven runs to surpass his previous four road starts combined and the Colorado Rockies followed a shutout victory with a 10-0 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks Tuesday night.

"If they kick me off the team today it wouldn't surprise me," Guthrie said. "I haven't earned a spot here to pitch very well and I respect the game. I understand how it works. I have seen guys come up and do very well and earn it and I have seen guys who have done very well and lose it. If I don't make another start here it wouldn't surprise me. I will come to work every day as long as I have a jersey and do the best I can."

Guthrie had felt at home on the road this season, allowing six earned runs in 24 1-3 innings in four starts away from Coors Field while going 1-2 with an 8.87 ERA in the thin air.

He wasn't so good in his first start in the desert, allowing seven runs on 11 hits in 3 1-3 innings, but Rockies manager Jim Tracy wasn't ready to give up on him just yet.

"We are going to keep pitching him," Tracy said. "He is a guy we need, simply put. We have kids in this rotation and the kids the two previous days stepped up and gave us tremendous performances. He has to realize that he has to step up. We need him in the fold."

Arizona ace Ian Kennedy (5-5) has put together a couple of solid performances after making a tweak to his mechanics.

Working to keep on top of the ball, the right-hander matched career high with 12 strikeouts in six innings for his second straight strong start. He wouldn't say what the adjustment was, but it sure seems to be working.

"It's a secret," Kennedy said after joining Randy Johnson as the only Arizona pitchers to strike out at least 12 in six innings or less. "It was just a minor mechanical thing. Sometimes when I'm out there, I can feel myself get under pitches and it just tells myself that little key."

Finally getting some run support certainly didn't hurt.

A night after being shut out by the Rockies, the Diamondbacks hit early and didn't really stop, roughing up Guthrie on their way to a season-high 17 hits.

Jason Kubel hit a two-run homer and drove in five runs. Gerardo Parra had a solo homer among his four hits. Aaron Hill hit a two-run shot and finished a double short of the cycle.

By the time they were done, the Diamondbacks had their most lopsided shutout victory since beating San Francisco 11-0 on Aug. 27, 2009.

"It was an all-around great effort," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said.

Kennedy seemed to have good command of everything, despite struggling in the bullpen before the game.

The right-hander won 21 games and was fourth in NL Cy Young voting last year, firmly establishing himself as Arizona's ace. He got off to a decent start this season before a miserable May, opening the month with five losses while allowing 20 earned runs in 30 innings.

Kennedy regained form in his last start, giving up a run in 7 2-3 innings in a win over San Francisco on May 30 to end the longest losing streak of his career.

The right-hander was good again against the Rockies, striking out seven in the first three innings, including Guthrie and Dexter Fowler with runners on second and third to end the second. Kennedy kept getting Colorado's hitters to swing and miss after that, striking out 12 for third time in his career while allowing five hits.

"The curveball wasn't really good in the bullpen," Kennedy said. "But for me, to have my arm feel good and to have a good rhythm, I'm pretty happy with it."

Notes: Gibson gave Justin Upton the night off and might not play him on Wednesday to give the right fielder a mental break. Upton is hitting .243 with four hits in his last 24 at-bats, and Gibson said he is pressing as he tries to break out of the season-long slump. ... Rockies INF Jonathan Herrera, who has been on the DL since May 23 with a strained right hamstring, will begin his rehab assignment with Double-A Tulsa on Wednesday. ... Arizona LHP Wade Miley, the starter Wednesday against Colorado, leads all rookies with six wins and a 2.72 ERA. ... Rockies LHP Josh Outman will make his second start after starting the season with eight appearances out of the bullpen.

Kubel, Hill lead Diamondbacks in rout of Rockies
Jun 6th 2012, 06:39

Phoenix, AZ –  Jason Kubel and Aaron Hill each finished a double short of the cycle as Arizona dominated Colorado, 10-0, in the second contest of a three-game set.

Kubel hit a two-run home run and finished 3-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored while Hill also went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run for the Diamondbacks, who have won four of six. Ian Kennedy (5-5) gave up just five hits with a walk and tied a career-high with 12 strikeouts over six innings.

"[Kershaw] threw great, obviously we swung the bats well tonight and that makes it for a fun game," said Kubel.

Jeremy Guthrie (3-4) was torched for seven runs on 11 hits over just 3 1/3 innings for the Rockies, who had won seven of eight coming in. Marco Scutaro had two hits in the loss.

"I haven't thrown the ball well. I've been really working on it in between starts but I understand that if there is not improvement there will be changes," Guthrie said.

The Diamondbacks got the only runs they needed in the second inning when Hill hit his sixth home run of the year, a two-run shot to left.

Kubel hit his two-run shot in the third and the Diamondbacks plated three more runs in the fourth.

With two on and one out, Kubel punched a two-run single to center and moved to third on a Miguel Montero single to right. Chris Young then singled for a 7-0 lead.

Gerardo Parra, who went 4-for-5 with three runs scored, hit a leadoff homer in the eighth. Willie Bloomquist then singled and Kubel followed with a triple. Montero's sac fly accounted for the final score.

Colorado had wasted a one-out, bases-loaded opportunity in the second when Guthrie and Dexter Fowler both struck out to end the frame.

Scutaro led off the third with a double, but was stranded there and Colorado had just one runner reach second base for the rest of the game.

Game Notes

Colorado has won four of the seven games with Arizona this season...The Rockies batted 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left seven on base...Guthrie has lost three of his last four starts...Kennedy has won his past two starts after losing five in a row...Josh Outman pitches for Colorado in the rubber match on Wednesday while Wade Miley will take the mound for Arizona.

FOXNews.com: Herrera again the hero as Dodgers edge Phillies

Herrera again the hero as Dodgers edge Phillies
Jun 6th 2012, 05:37

Elian Herrera continued his strong performance in the absence of the injured Matt Kemp, delivering a second straight game-winning hit to fire the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers to a 2-1 win over Philadelphia on Tuesday.

Herrera, who has played multiple positions for the Dodgers including Kemp's standard spot of center field, hit a two-run double in the eighth against Cliff Lee who was in line for his first win of the season.

"It's funny, I'm laughing, smiling inside, while everybody (in the crowd) was making noise," Herrera told reporters of the final tense innings. "I was happy. I thank God for this moment. It's crazy, but I was happy."

Herrera also came through with the clinching RBI in the ninth inning of Monday's game against the Phillies (28-29), who have now notched four straight losses.

Lee (0-3) struck out 12 and gave up only two hits in the first seven innings, but conceded four in the eighth to squander the Phillies' 1-0 lead.

A former Cy Young winner, Lee has turned in several strong performances this season but has been let down by the Phillies' blunt offense.

"There's nothing I can do about it," said Lee of his team's scoring struggles.

"That's something that's kind of out of my control. All I can do is go out there and make pitches and try to put up as many zeros as I can. I try not to worry too much about that."

Philadelphia, winners of the last five National League East division titles, are still fighting through injuries and find themselves in last place.

Los Angeles starter Chad Billingsley surrendered a run in the first inning but completed seven innings to earn the win and keep the Dodgers (35-21) atop the Major League standings.

Kinsler, Rangers top A's
Jun 6th 2012, 05:46

Oakland, CA –  Ian Kinsler had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Texas Rangers past the Oakland Athletics, 6-3, in the second test of a four-game set at the Coliseum.

Derek Holland (5-4) allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks through 5 1/3 innings to earn the win for Texas, which has won two of its last three games on the heels of a four-game losing streak.

Joe Nathan tossed a scoreless ninth to record his 12th save of the year.

Travis Blackley (0-1) gave up five runs on seven hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings to suffer the loss.

Collin Cowgill hit a two-run homer while Yoenis Cespedes added a solo shot for the Athletics, who lost for the 11th time in their last 13 games.

Texas struck first after Mike Napoli led off the third with a walk and advanced to second on Yorvit Torrealba's infield single before both runners moved up a base on a Craig Gentry sacrifice bunt.

Kinsler stepped up next and pulled double into the left-field corner to plate Napoli and Torrealba. Josh Hamilton added a double two batters later to bring home Kinsler for a 3-0 advantage.

After Oakland left a runner on third in the bottom of the frame, the Rangers added a run in the fourth on a Torrealba sacrifice fly and made it a 5-0 game in the fifth on Michael Young's two-out, run-scoring triple that knocked Blackley out of the game.

But the Athletics started to fight back in the home fifth when Kurt Suzuki doubled prior to Cowgill's two-out blast over the left-field wall.

Cespedes then hammered a leadoff homer in the sixth to close the gap to 5-3.

Brandon Inge followed with a walk and would later advance to second with one out on Kila Ka`aihue's base hit to right, but Alexi Ogando entered in relief of Holland and retired the next two batters to end the inning.

Ogando would then strand men on second and third in the seventh and Mike Adams worked a scoreless eighth before Elvis Andrus' RBI single in the ninth gave the Rangers a three-run cushion.

Nathan allowed a one-out single to Jemile Weeks in the bottom of the ninth, but retired Cowgill on a pop up to third and fanned Josh Reddick on three pitches to end the game.

Game Notes

Athletics pitcher Andrew Carignan left the game in the eighth inning with an apparent arm injury...Cowgill extended his career-high hit streak to eight games with his first home run of the season...Holland improved to 4-1 in 10 career appearances -- seven starts -- against Oakland...The season series between the teams is tied, 2-2.
