Djokovic, Monaco reach Miami semis
Mar 30th 2012, 01:34

Key Biscayne, FL –  World No. 1 Novak Djokovic moved closer to another title at the $3.973 million Sony Ericsson Open with a straight-set win over fifth-seeded David Ferrer in the quarterfinals Thursday.

Djokovic, the defending champion, battled back from a late break in the second set to down Ferrer 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) and set up a meeting with Juan Monaco in the semifinals.

Djokovic needed almost two hours to get past Ferrer after the Spaniard won a service break to knot the second set at 5-5, then held for 6-5. But Djokovic, who beat Rafael Nadal in last year's final and also won this title in 2007, held his next serve then cruised through the tiebreaker to move on.

Earlier, Monaco celebrated his 28th birthday in style by flattening a eighth- seeded American Mardy Fish 6-1, 6-3 in 82 minutes on the hardcourts at Crandon Park.

Monaco, seeded 21st, survived a break that tied the second set 3-3 by breaking right back. Two games later, the match was over, with Monaco advancing after a backhand volley winner.

Monaco improved to 3-2 over Fish, including a 2-1 record on hardcourts, while Djokovic moved to 8-5 lifetime against Ferrer. The two will play Friday with a trip to the final on the line.

Friday's other semi will pit the second-seeded Nadal against fourth-seeded Andy Murray, who beat Djokovic in the 2009 final. The former world No. 1 and 10-time major champion Nadal is a three-time Miami runner-up and owns a co- record 19 career Masters titles.

The 2012 Miami champ will collect $659,775.
