Montana fires athletic director, football coach
Mar 29th 2012, 18:33

Missoula, MT –  The University of Montana fired athletic director Jim O'Day and head football coach Robin Pflugrad in a stunning move Thursday.

Montana is one of the powers in the Football Championship Subdivision, with two national championships and five runner-up finishes since 1995.

The decision could be related to the university's recent investigation into numerous alleged sexual assaults on campus, some of which involved Montana football players.

Starting quarterback Jordan Johnson recently missed the beginning of spring drills after a temporary restraining order was filed against him by a female student. The order was later dismissed in favor of a civil agreement that mandates he and his accuser avoid contact.

The Missoulian newspaper reported that Montana assistant athletic director Greg Sundberg told staff members of the two firings in a notice Thursday morning.

"It is with great sadness that I inform you all that this morning our Athletic Director, Jim O'Day, and Head Football Coach, Robin Pflugrad, were released of their duties as of 8:00 a.m. this morning. It will be a very difficult time for all of us in the coming days and I would ask that you stay positive," the notice said.

"As more information comes out, I will be sure to let you know. At this point and time this is all that I know."

Pflugrad had an 18-7 record in two seasons as head coach. The Grizzlies went 11-3 and earned a Big Sky Conference co-title this past season, reaching the FCS semifinals before they lost to Sam Houston State.

O'Day, a Montana graduate, has served as its athletic director since June 2005.

A news conference was planned by the university for 4 p.m. ET Thursday.
