Thunder end Spurs' streak with Game 3 rout
Jun 1st 2012, 05:15

Oklahoma City, OK –  The Spurs hadn't lost a game since early April. The Thunder hadn't lost at home in these playoffs. Something had to give on Thursday and in the end it was San Antonio.

Kevin Durant scored 22 points, Thabo Sefolosha had 19 and the Thunder rolled to a 102-82 victory in Game 3 of the Western Conference finals.

The Spurs suffered their first defeat since April 11, ending a stretch of 20 straight wins. The run included 10 victories in this postseason, including triumphs in the first two games of this series.

But the Thunder jumped out to an 8-0 lead on Thursday and led by as many as 27 to improve to 6-0 at home in the postseason. They racked up 18 fastbreak points and got a strong effort from their supporting cast. Sefolosha had six steals and scored 16 of his points in the second half. Serge Ibaka finished with 14 points and three blocks and James Harden scored 15.

Tony Parker and Stephen Jackson had 16 points apiece to pace San Antonio, which shot just 39.5 percent and committed 21 turnovers, leading to 20 Thunder points.

Game 4 of the series is set for Saturday in Oklahoma City.

Tim Duncan scored seven of his 11 points in the first quarter and the Spurs withstood Oklahoma City's early barrage to go on top 13-12. They held on for a 24-22 lead after one but the Thunder were in control for the remainder of the game.

Harden was the catalyst in the second quarter. He scored nine straight points as part of an 18-6 run to open the frame. Sefolosha added a three-pointer and backup big man Nick Collison had a pair of buckets, including a layup which gave the Thunder a 40-30 advantage.

They pushed the lead to 15 before halftime and never trailed again.

It was 54-41 entering the third quarter and the Spurs couldn't muster enough offense to mount a comeback. They scored just 19 points in the frame on 36.8 percent shooting. Sefolosha countered with nine points and Derek Fisher gave the Thunder a 22-point lead with a trey shortly before the fourth.

San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich sat his starters for the entirety of the final frame.

Game Notes

The Spurs' 20 straight wins marked the longest win streak to extend into the playoffs in NBA history. They were the fourth team in NBA history to win 20 games in a row...Only 14 teams in NBA history have overcome an 0-2 deficit to win a best-of-seven series.

Los Angeles, CA –  Carlos Gonzalez helped Colorado wrap up a four- game sweep of Houston with a three-run home run in a 11-5 win on Thursday. Just one night after hitting three home runs, Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. He finished the series 11-for-18 with four homers, eight RBI and seven runs scored. Michael Cuddyer added three hits, three RBI and two runs scored while Marco Scutaro hit a solo home run for the Rockies, who have won six of eight. Jeremy Guthrie (3-3) benefited from the run support as he gave up five runs on 12 hits over seven innings. J.D. Martinez hit a solo home run while Jose Altuve added three hits and an RBI for the Astros, who have lost six straight. Bud Norris (5-2) was torched for nine runs in just 1 2/3 innings as he lost for the first time since April 24. He was 4-0 with a 1.17 earned run average in May coming into the game.

Final Score: Milwaukee 6, Los Angeles 2

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Zack Greinke pitched six strong innings while Carlos Gomez and Aramis Ramirez each hit a two-run homer as the Milwaukee Brewers took a 6-2 win to cap a four-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Greinke (6-2) gave up just one run on nine hits with a walk and six strikeouts while Rickie Weeks and Martin Maldonado each drove in a run for the Brewers, who have won six of their last eight. It's Milwaukee's first-ever four game sweep at Dodger Stadium. Chad Billingsley (2-4) was touched for four runs on six hits over six innings with eight strikeouts to take the loss. He also drove in a run and went 2-for-2 for the Dodgers, who have lost six of eight. The real bad news for Los Angeles, though, came before the game as the team put outfielder Matt Kemp back on the disabled list. He had come off the DL on Tuesday, but aggravated his strained left hamstring on Wednesday and will now be out for another spell.

Thunder rolls over Spurs to reignite series
Jun 1st 2012, 05:14

The Oklahoma City Thunder reignited the Western Conference finals with a 102-82 home victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday, reducing their deficit in the best-of-seven series to 2-1 and ending the visitors' 20-game winning streak.

San Antonio, who won the first two games on home court, were unable to contain a fired-up Oklahoma City side as they suffered their first loss in 50 days.

The defeat leaves the Spurs one short of the Lakers' record of 11 straight post-season wins but more importantly it raises the prospect of a series that could go down to the wire.

For the first two games it looked as if San Antonio, built around experience and three championship wins in the 2000's, were in firm control.

Thursday's response from the Thunder was a reminder that the talented young team, who lost out to Dallas at this stage last year, are a formidable force on home court.

"I think they played smarter than we did and harder than we did," said Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich.

Kevin Durant top scored for the Thunder with 22 points but it was a team effort, particularly on defense, that paved the way to victory as the Spurs' offensive threat of Tony Parker (16 points) and Tim Duncan (11 points) were neutralized.

Durant was one of five Thunders players to make double figures, including Russell Westbrook whose ten points were accompanied by some intelligent controlling play throughout.

The Thunder's Swiss forward Thabo Sefolosha had an outstanding game guarding Parker and finished with 19 points to go with his six steals, including a tone-setting four steals in the opening three minutes.

"He's been a great defender for us all season and he was a huge help tonight," said Westbrook.

Oklahoma City forced 21 turnovers while giving up just eight and they imposed themselves on the game from the outset taking an 8-0 lead in the first three minutes, roared on by a noisy and passionate home crowd.

The Thunder had established a 54-41 lead by halftime with Durant making 16 points while the Spurs offense was restricted to 40 percent shooting in the opening two quarters.

The Thunder took an 18 point lead into the fourth quarter and Popovich opted to keep Parker and Duncan on the sidelines for the final 15 minutes, his thoughts already moving to Game Four.

Parker had shot just 6-12 as Sefolosha smothered him and the Thunder took advantage of their turnovers with 18 fast break points.

"I thought that we played great defense from the start, defensively that was as well as you can play against the best team in basketball," said Thunder head coach Scott Brooks.

Parker said the Spurs would now have to study video of the game to try and work out how to overcome the Thunder in Saturday's Game Four.

"They played with a lot of energy, more passion than us tonight and deserved the win - they played better, we will have to do a lot better if we are going to win here".

Brewers sweep Dodgers
Jun 1st 2012, 05:43

Los Angeles, CA –  Zack Greinke pitched six strong innings while Carlos Gomez and Aramis Ramirez each hit a two-run homer as the Milwaukee Brewers took a 6-2 win to cap a four-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

He also drove in a run and went 2- for-2 for the Dodgers, who have lost six of eight.

The real bad news for Los Angeles, though, came before the game as the team put outfielder Matt Kemp back on the disabled list.

He had come off the DL on Tuesday, but aggravated his strained left hamstring on Wednesday and will now be out for another spell.

The Brewers jumped on top in the second inning. Ramirez led off with a walk and Taylor Green followed with a double. Weeks then singled home Ramirez and Maldonado hit into a fielder's choice to plate Green for a 2-0 lead.

The Dodgers got one back in the second on a two-out single from Billingsley to score Adam Kennedy. Elian Herrera walked to load the bases, but A.J. Ellis looked at strike three to end the frame.

The third inning saw Milwaukee take a 4-1 lead as Nyjer Morgan singled to leadoff the inning and Ramirez hit his fifth homer of the season.

The Dodgers put runners on base in every inning through the first seven, but hit into double plays in the fifth and seventh.

In the home eighth, Alex Castellanos, making his MLB-debut, was hit by a pitch with one out, but Scott Van Slyke was ruled out on catcher interference and Dee Gordon grounded into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

Gomez hit his second home run of the season with a man on base in the ninth to give Milwaukee a five-run lead.

The Dodgers put their first two men on base in the ninth off of Tim Dillard, but Ellis hit into a double play. Manny Parra then gave up an RBI single to James Loney, but got Andre Ethier to groundout to end the game.

Game Notes

The Dodgers recalled Castellanos from Triple-A Albuquerque to take Kemp's spot on the roster...The Dodgers hit the road for the next 10 games starting in Colorado on Friday...Milwaukee plays three at home against Pittsburgh beginning on Friday...The Brewers took six of seven from the Dodgers this season...The last time Los Angeles suffered a four-game sweep at home was at the hands of Colorado from Aug. 9-12, 1993.

Illinois' Thomas Pieters wins NCAA golf title
Jun 1st 2012, 03:39

LOS ANGELES –  Illinois sophomore Thomas Pieters shot a final-round 71 to win the men's NCAA Division I golf championship Thursday at Riviera Country Club.

Pieters finished at 5-under 208, three shots better than Julien Brun of TCU and Florida's Tyler McCumber, son of PGA Tour player, Mark McCumber.

Pieters began the day with a two-stroke lead and after a bogey on his sixth hole was tied with UCLA's Anton Arboleda. The Belgian made a birdie on the next hole and never relinquished the lead.

"It was a tough day," Pieters said. "My strategy was to make a lot of pars. I struggled a little and the last couple of holes I was nervous, but I managed to hang on."

Alabama went wire-to-wire in stroke play to grab the No. 1 seed going into Friday's match play. The Crimson Tide finished with a three-day total of 7-over par 859. UCLA finished second, two shots behind. Texas, San Diego State — California, Washington and Oregon earned the other spots.

Florida State and Kent State finished tied for the eighth and final spot. They will return Friday morning and all five team members will play sudden death with the best four scores counting.

Alabama will wait to see who it faces in the first round.

"They were a little nervous, but we told them the goal was to finish first," Alabama coach Jay Seawell said. "If you just try to qualify, you can fail. We wanted them to play like they have all week and for the most part they did."

BOSTON –  Max Scherzer pitched into the seventh inning, Delmon Young homered and the Detroit Tigers beat the Boston Red Sox 7-3 on Thursday night to avoid a four-game series sweep.

Scherzer (5-3) retired nine consecutive batters before Nick Punto led off the seventh with a walk, forcing the right-hander from the game. He allowed three runs and seven hits in his third consecutive victory, closing out a strong May.

Young hit a solo drive in the eighth to make it 5-3, then added a run-scoring single in the ninth.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit his 10th homer for Boston, which was seeking its first four-game sweep against the Tigers since 2004. Josh Beckett (4-4) allowed four runs and a season-high 10 hits in seven innings.

The Red Sox opened May with eight losses in nine games to drop to 12-19 on the year. But they closed out the month with a 14-6 run to pull within three of the division lead.

Young and Quintin Berry each had three hits for Detroit, which finished with 14 overall. Berry also scored twice and stole two bases.

Thunder wallop Spurs 102-82, pull within 2-1
Jun 1st 2012, 03:43

OKLAHOMA CITY –  Kevin Durant scored 22 points, Thabo Sefolosha set playoff career-bests with 19 points and six steals, and the Oklahoma City Thunder snapped San Antonio's 20-game winning streak by beating the Spurs 102-82 in Game 3 of the Western Conference finals on Thursday night.

Oklahoma City closed its series deficit to 2-1 and will host Game 4 on Saturday night.

Sefolosha threw a wrench in the Spurs' well-oiled offense at the start, getting four steals in the first 3 minutes. The Spurs ended up committing a postseason-worst 21 turnovers and scoring their least points all season.

Tony Parker and Stephen Jackson led the Spurs with 16 points apiece. Tim Duncan had 11 points on 5-for-15 shooting, taking 11 of San Antonio's first 25 shots as the offense went through the All-Star center instead of Parker.

San Antonio had been averaging 109.4 points during its month-and-a-half winning streak and had been held to double digits only twice.

The Spurs, who already set an NBA record for the longest winning streak carried over from the regular season into the playoffs, were trying to match the league mark for most wins to start the postseason. The Lakers won 11 straight to start the 1989 and 2001 playoffs, getting swept in the NBA finals the first time and winning it all the second.

The Spurs' last loss was to the Lakers at home on April 11.

Parker and Duncan didn't play in the final 15 minutes, and coach Gregg Popovich pulled the plug after another series of three straight turnovers allowed the deficit to reach 23 points early in the fourth quarter.

Sefolosha had a right-handed dunk off a lob pass from Russell Westbrook, who followed with his own two-handed jam on an alley-oop pass and Sefolosha followed with a reverse layup on another turnover-fueled fast-break chance to push the lead to 86-63 with 9:48 left.

The Thunder put together another 9-0 run coinciding with Manu Ginobili coming out of the game, and featuring Serge Ibaka sticking his tongue out after nailing a jumper from the top of the key. Coach Scott Brooks soon followed suit and pulled his own front-line players with the game well in hand.

The Spurs wiped out a 24-point deficit in Game 3 against the Clippers in Los Angeles in the last round, but they weren't recovering in this one.

San Antonio managed only 24 points in the paint after averaging 46 through the first two games of the series and 47.8 through the playoffs.

Oklahoma City already held a 28-8 scoring edge in the paint while taking a 54-41 halftime lead and it never got better for San Antonio, which couldn't get any closer than 11 points in the second half.

The Thunder scored the game's first eight points, feeding off Sefolosha's steals, but San Antonio recovered in time to take the lead with more than 5 minutes left in the opening period.

Oklahoma City took the lead early in the second quarter and there was no looking back.

Sefolosha set up Ibaka's two-handed dunk and hit a 3-pointer during a 13-1 run, with San Antonio's only point coming on a free throw by Ginobili after Durant was called for a technical foul while arguing a call from the bench.

Oklahoma City's lead ballooned to 15 when Kendrick Perkins grabbed Westbrook's airball and dunked it with two hands.

Notes: Duncan did have five blocks to surpass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's NBA playoff record of 476 by one. ... Rapper Lil Wayne tweeted before the game that he planned to attend but "was denied by the team to be in their arena." Thunder spokesman Dan Mahoney said the rapper's representatives demanded front-row seats but none were available. "We'd love to have him at a game, but like anyone else, he needs a ticket," Mahoney said. ... Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin presented TNT analyst and former NBA All-Star Charles Barkley with a pair of boots, a steak and an order of lamb fries — a dish that leaves out the otherwise undesirable part of the anatomy out of its name — during the pregame show.

Top Shelf: Kopitar leads Kings to ugly Game 1 win
Jun 1st 2012, 01:18

Philadelphia, PA –  Los Angeles Kings captain Dustin Brown summed up the ice conditions at Prudential Center for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals by saying, "It was like playing with a tennis ball."

Luckily for the Kings, the puck didn't bounce away from Anze Kopitar when he delivered a nifty goal in overtime to lift Los Angeles to a 2-1 victory over the hosting New Jersey Devils.

Kopitar's highlight-reel score was a rare instance of beauty in a tightly contested Game 1 that featured a total of 42 shots -- 25 of which were taken by the visiting Kings, who improved their road record this postseason to an amazing 9-0.

Neither goal in regulation was much to look at it, but Kopitar altered that trend with his winning goal. After Kings defenseman Drew Doughty moved the puck up the left-wing boards, Justin Williams backhanded a pass blindly into the neutral zone where Kopitar was all alone to collect the disc and skate in alone on Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur.

Kopitar used some slick stickhandling to switch to his forehand and lift the puck over an outstretched Brodeur. As an example of Kopitar's excellent hockey awareness, the 24-year-old said after the game that he remembered using a backhand against Brodeur in a shootout in his rookie season of 2006-07.

"I guess that goes back a few years when, you know, we were in the shootout in L.A., and I went backhand on him," Kopitar said. "Maybe he thought I was going to do it again. Tonight, I just wanted to mix it up a little bit."

It seemed like a crazy notion that a future Hall of Famer like Brodeur would remember Kopitar's shootout move from nearly six years ago. However, after Game 1, the Devils goaltender said that he "thought (Kopitar) would go backhand." It's still unclear if Brodeur remembered that exact play from Nov. 27, 2006, or if gleaned that information from studying Kopitar's habits in general.

"It feels great. Every time you get the chance to finish it off in OT, you know, to face a world class goaltender like Marty is, it's definitely a good feeling," Kopitar said.

With his game-winning tally at 8:13 of OT, Kopitar tied Brown for the Kings' postseason lead in both goals (seven) and points (16). Yet, despite the similarities in production this spring, Brown has garnered more headlines than Kopitar. That makes sense, considering Brown is a heavy-hitter with a certain brashness to his game on the ice, while Kopitar is a quiet and sublimely steady performer.

One teammate who had high praise for Kopitar's place in the game is fellow forward Mike Richards, who has gained a tremendous amount of respect for the Slovenian over his first year with Los Angeles.

"I'd say (he's) top-two, top-three in the world in skill," Richards told NBC Sports after Game 1. "You don't see him very much because we play a defensive system. But I got the pleasure over the year of watching him in practice and playing with him over the year. I've played against a lot of great players like Sidney Crosby and played with Claude Giroux, but he's got to be up there as one of the best."

Kopitar, who became the first-ever Slovenian to play in the NHL when he debuted for the Kings as a 19-year-old, has been slowly gaining respect around the league, and for good reason. He's never scored less than 61 points in a season and has posted 25 or more goals in five straight seasons after scoring 20 as a rookie.

The fact that Kopitar, who also has developed into one of the league's best defensive forwards, has been able to fly under the radar for this long is a credit to the depth of L.A. When folks talk about the Kings, they usually begin with goaltender Jonathan Quick and then sing the praises of guys like Brown, Richards or defenseman Drew Doughty before Kopitar gets so much as a mention.

While the Kings seem to have become an overnight sensation in these playoffs, the club's success this spring has been a long time coming. Like Kopitar and the numerous other players on this team that were drafted and developed by the organization, the Kings have waited patiently for their moment in the sun and they seem to be enjoying every minute of it.

LIDSTROM RETIREMENT SIGNALS END OF AN ERA

Although the Detroit Red Wings knew this day would come eventually, the club had to hope Nicklas Lidstrom would come back for another year. Alas, that was not to be as the legendary defenseman announced his retirement from the game on Thursday after 20 spectacular seasons.

Lidstrom, who won his seventh Norris Trophy as the league's top defenseman just last season, is an obvious first-ballot Hall of Famer and arguably the best defenseman of his generation. Selected 53rd overall by Detroit in the 1989 draft, the 42-year-old Swede helped his only NHL franchise win four Stanley Cup titles.

"It's one of the most emotional days in Red Wing history," Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch said. "Nick has been a Rock of Gibraltar for us. He has just been a solid winner."

There is no doubt Lidstrom could've been an effective defensemen for Detroit next year and possibly for a few more seasons, but his comments on Thursday left little doubt that he himself is ready to hang up the skates.

"I know what I have to do to get ready for a long year," said Lidstrom, who became the first European-born and trained captain of a Stanley Cup-winning team in 2008. "I'm not willing to sacrifice that to have a good summer or take it easy. I know what I have to do and it's a grind to go through, which all of us do in here. Then you hit the grind of (the) season. It's a long year. You play 3-4 games every week for over six months and that takes its toll on you, too."

Perhaps it's Lidstrom's nickname -- "The Perfect Human" -- that made it seem like he could play forever. But, as Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock made clear on Thursday, it's not like Lidstrom's legacy is in doubt.

"Everyone's going to know who he was long after he's done playing," Babcock said.

Dream beat shorthanded Mercury by 16
Jun 1st 2012, 01:17

Atlanta, GA –  Sancho Lyttle and Cathrine Kraayeveld scored 12 points apiece Thursday and the Atlanta Dream rolled to an 81-65 win over the shorthanded Phoenix Mercury.

The Mercury announced earlier in the day that guard Diana Taurasi will be out indefinitely with a strained left hip flexor, an injury the four-time reigning WNBA scoring champion sustained in training camp.

Angel McCoughtry, Armintie Price and Lindsey Harding added 10 points each for the Dream, who improved to 2-2 on the season.

The two-time defending Eastern Conference champions used a 24-11 difference in the second quarter to take a 43-27 lead at halftime.

DeWanna Bonner scored 22 points and Candice Dupree had 14 to lead the Mercury, who fell to 1-3 after their second straight loss.

Taurasi missed Phoenix's season opener against Minnesota and played sparingly against Tulsa before scoring 18 points in a loss last Saturday to Los Angeles in the team's home opener.

She was not with the team in Atlanta and will be re-evaluated on a day-to-day basis, the Mercury said.

FOXNews.com: Goodell confident bounty hunting no longer issue

Goodell confident bounty hunting no longer issue
May 31st 2012, 23:54

CHICAGO –  Commissioner Roger Goodell is confident that bounty hunting will no longer be an issue in the NFL because of the severe penalties handed out in the wake of the New Orleans Saints scandal.

Goodell said the actions taken by the league "speak very loudly."

"I heard that from our clubs, from our personnel," he said during a news conference in Chicago on Thursday. "They recognize it's not part of the game. It doesn't need to be part of the game. And I don't think it's going to be an issue going forward."

The NFL said it found that former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams oversaw a bounty program in New Orleans from 2009 to 2011 which paid off-the-books bonuses of $1,500 for "knockouts," or hits which forced a player out of games, and $1,000 for "cart-offs," which left players needing help off the field.

Williams, who took a job as the defensive coordinator in St. Louis, has since been suspended indefinitely and coach Sean Payton was banished for the 2012 season. General manager Mickey Loomis was suspended eight games and assistant head coach Joe Vitt for six games.

There was also a $500,000 fine for the team and the loss of two second-round draft picks, not to mention suspensions for several current and former Saints players.

Current Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma was suspended for the upcoming season, while defensive end Will Smith got a four-game punishment. Green Bay defensive end Anthony Hargrove (eight games) and Cleveland linebacker Scott Fujita (three games) were also punished.

The NFL Players Association has challenged Goodell's power to impose penalties and has asked an arbitrator to decide if the players should be punished for the system.

Goodell would not say if he thought the case would be resolved before the end of the season, pointing out that it's in arbitration.

It's one of several areas where the union has challenged the league during a combative offseason, including a grievance accusing the NFL of using a secret salary cap during the uncapped 2010 season that cost the players at least $1 billion. The union also filed a grievance for drug-related suspensions for two Denver Broncos.

Vilma has filed a defamation lawsuit against Goodell, whose lawyers requested a delay to respond, something the league calls routine in such cases.

"I think one of the things that's made the NFL great is we've solved our own problems," Goodell said. "Several of those things are collectively bargained, which we've just concluded a 10-year agreement, and they're in the collective bargaining agreement. I believe that our process has worked. We've modified those processes, even outside of the collective bargaining, to make them responsible and responsive to their needs. But we do want to make sure that at every point we uphold the standards that our fans expect."

Goodell was at Soldier Field with Mayor Rahm Emanuel to recognize the stadium as the first to become a LEED-certified building, meaning it is considered environmentally friendly.

They also discussed the possibility of Chicago hosting a Super Bowl.

"We did speak about this earlier," Goodell said. "We are, as you know, hosting a Super Bowl in New York in an open-air stadium in 2014, and we're excited about that. We think it's going to be a great thing for our fans and a great thing for New York.

"I think if we can do it successfully there, and I think that opens up doors where we'll be looking at. Obviously, you know how to host great events. ... And you've got a great stadium."

Emanuel touted the recent NATO summit as an example of the city's ability to host a big event, with world leaders in town, and he said Chicago would be a "perfect place" to have a Super Bowl.

Of course, everyone is familiar with Chicago's reputation for savage winters and Soldier Field lacks a roof. It also holds just 63,500 fans.

Would the city have to enlarge the stadium to attract a Super Bowl? Emanuel would not say.

"I think the commissioner said something which is really, really important," Emanuel said. "The first step is to host something in New York, which is an open stadium."

Goodell acknowledged that capacity "is always an issue."

"The most important thing now is having a great stadium and a city that can have the infrastructure to host the hundreds of thousands of people that come in," he said.

Hall of Famer and humanitarian Twyman dies at age 78
May 31st 2012, 23:54

Hall of Famer Jack Twyman, a standout player in college and the National Basketball Association (NBA) and a champion for a paralyzed former team mate, died on Wednesday at the age of 78.

Twyman, who starred for the University of Cincinnati and with the NBA Rochester and Cincinnati Royals franchise (now the Sacramento Kings) in the 1950s and early 60s, died at a Cincinnati hospice of complications from blood cancer.

The sweet-shooting forward was a six-time NBA All-Star with the Royals and was also remembered for his relationship with team mate Maurice Stokes, a budding star player who became paralyzed after hitting his head on the floor in the final game of the Royals' 1957-58 season.

Twyman raised money for Stokes through charity basketball games and golf tournaments and became his legal guardian to assist with his care-taking and medical bills.

"The Basketball Hall of Fame and the game of basketball not only lost an incredible athlete but also an incredible man," John L. Doleva, president of the Basketball Hall of Fame said in a statement. "Jack will always be remembered for his hard work and his huge heart."

After the death of Stokes in 1970 at the age of 36, Twyman continued his fund-raising to help other needy former players.

On the basketball court, Twyman finished his college career as Cincinnati's all-time leading scorer and in 1960 he averaged a career high 31.2 points a game for the Royals, with whom he played his entire 11-year professional career.

A successful businessman, Twyman also worked as a TV analyst on NBA network broadcasts and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1983.

Renner leads by 2 in North Carolina
Jun 1st 2012, 00:13

Raleigh, NC –  Jim Renner fired an eight-under 63 on Thursday to grab a two-stroke lead after the opening round of the Rex Hospital Open.

This was easily Renner's best round of the year as he has missed the cut in six of his nine starts. His best round prior to this year was an opening-round 65 at the BMW Charity Pro-Am, where he tied for 33rd.

Shane Bertsch carded a six-under 65 and was joined in second place by Steven Bowditch, Reid Edstrom and Jeff Curl.

Justin Hicks, Scott Gardiner, B.J. Staten and Corey Nagy are one stroke back at minus-five at TPC Wakefield Plantation.

Dodgers slugger Kemp back on disabled list
May 31st 2012, 23:33

The front-running Los Angeles Dodgers suffered a setback on Thursday when they placed slugging outfielder Matt Kemp back on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring.

Kemp, who last year led the National League with 39 home runs and 126 runs batted in while hitting for a .324 average, had played just two games after missing 14 games with the same injury.

This season, Kemp had blasted 12 home runs in 36 games played and was batting .355.

The Dodgers, whose 32-18 record is the best mark in Major League Baseball, called up infielder/outfielder Alex Castellanos from Triple-A Albuquerque to take Kemp's spot on the roster.

Castellanos, making his first appearance in the major leagues, was hitting .379 with 10 doubles, four triples, five homers and 14 RBIs in 22 games with Albuquerque.

Stallings shoots 66 to lead at Memorial
May 31st 2012, 23:06

Dublin, OH –  Scott Stallings drained three birdies in his final four holes to rise to the top of the leaderboard after one round at the Memorial Tournament.

Stallings entered the clubhouse with a six-under 66, and holds a one-shot lead over Spencer Levin and Erik Compton, who both carded five-under 67s.

Below those three players, however, the field is extremely bunched up.

Seven players share fourth place at three-under 69, including Rory Sabbatini, Aaron Baddeley and Brandt Snedeker. Behind that group are nine players who shot minus-two, among them Tiger Woods -- a four-time Memorial champion -- and Ernie Els.

Several high-profile players struggled Thursday, including Masters winner Bubba Watson (75) and Phil Mickelson, who withdrew after shooting a seven-over 79. He cited mental fatigue and poor hitting as reasons for the withdrawal.

Rockies place SS Tulowitzki on DL
May 31st 2012, 23:20

Denver, CO –  The Colorado Rockies placed shortstop Troy Tulowitzki on the disabled list Thursday because of a strained left groin muscle.

Tulowitzki came out of Wednesday night's 13-5 win over Houston after grounding out in the sixth inning.

He is hitting .287 this year with eight home runs and 27 RBI.

The Rockies activated infielder Chris Nelson, who went on the 15-day disabled list two weeks ago with left wrist inflammation. Nelson has 73 at-bats with Colorado this season and was hitting .219 with seven RBI.

MCREYNOLDS: Kahne, Francis Have Hit Their Stride
May 31st 2012, 23:15

It is safe to say that the performance we saw Sunday night out of Kasey Kahne and his No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports team is something we'd seen coming for about six weeks.

One of the major storylines coming into the 2102 season was Kasey finally getting behind the wheel of the No. 5 car for Hendrick Motorsports.

I was one of the more vocal ones that said it wouldn't surprise if Kahne's team carried the banner for Hendrick Motorsports in 2012. Kahne had a lot of speed in that car even when the team unloaded it in Daytona back in February. The problem early on seemed to be the result of self-induced pressure to live up to expectations. Unfortunately, the team went completely the opposite direction of where it wanted to be the first five to six races of the season.

Then things started to turn and you saw a string of six consecutive top-10 finishes out of Kasey and his team as they slowly rose from the ashes. Sunday obviously was the culmination as the group got its first win together in the Coca-Cola 600.

I even said back then that if you are going to have a problem as a team, this was the best of a bad situation. It had really fast race cars every week. It just seemed early on the team couldn't get out of its own way and didn't make the best decisions.

No one knows that better than Kasey Kahne. Like he said, he had been waiting on this ride for a year and a half. He wanted to go out and win every race. Basically, the team was trying too hard. Early on, Kasey was putting himself and that car in the wrong place at the wrong time.

That's all changed now. I spend a lot of time in the garage area and even the teams with wins under their belts in 2012 are pointing to the Hendrick camp as the team to beat for the championship. Just look at Sunday's results. You had three of that team's cars finish in the top eight and the fourth, Jimmie Johnson, would probably have but for a miscue on pit road.

Hendrick Motorsports is peaking right now and I really don't see that changing any time soon. Even though its taken roughly a third of the season to get that first win, I really don't see Kasey's win Sunday night as any kind of surprise. As I mentioned earlier, we've all basically have seen this coming for weeks.

There was a time this season when Kasey Kahne was 31st in the points. Remember the cutoff for a guaranteed starting spot each week is 35th. So despite his talent, his crew chief's talent and all the resources that Hendrick Motorsports has to offer, Kahne's team was flying dangerously close to that line.

Now Kasey has a win, two poles, six top 10's and three top fives under his belt. He really has come back from being left for dead and is 15th in the points. Even if he can't get to the top 10 in points, having that win in the bank is a critical asset for Kasey in making the 2012 Chase for the Sprint Cup.

What is really impressive when you look at Kasey and his crew chief Kenny Francis, they have now won races for three different organizations with three different brands of cars. They won in a Ford at Richard Petty Motorsports. They won in a Toyota at Red Bull Racing while they waited for the seat in the No. 5 car to open up. Now, obviously, they have won in a Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports.

Both Kasey and Kenny have been very vocal that this is the best team with the best resources at the fingertips that they have ever been a part of. You won't find two guys in that garage area that have a better appreciation for what they have than those two. I still maintain the sky's the limit for Kasey in 2012.

Li canters into third round in Paris
May 31st 2012, 15:09

Defending champion Li Na raced into the French Open third round when she brushed aside Frenchwoman Stephane Foretz Gacon 6-0 6-2 on Thursday.

Chinese seventh seed Li, who last year became the first Asian player to win a grand slam singles title, needed just 52 minutes to advance on Court One.

Foretz Gacon, the world number 86, won the first two points but that was as close as she came to victory as Li bagged the opening 10 games.

Foretz Gacon pulled a break back but the revival was short-lived with Li setting up a meeting against either Lauren Davis or her fellow American Christina Mchale.

FOXNews.com: Norris hopes to salvage finale in Colorado

Norris hopes to salvage finale in Colorado
May 31st 2012, 14:43

Bud Norris tries to cap off a sensational month of May this evening when the Houston Astros close a four-game set with the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

Norris has been terrific this month, going 4-0 with a major league-best 1.17 earned run average. He's only allowed four earned runs in his last six starts and three of them came his last time out on Saturday in Los Angeles, as the Dodgers reached him for three runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings.

The 27-year-old righty, who became the first Astros starter to not last five innings since April 13, escaped with a no-decision in that one and is 5-1 on the year with a 3.34 ERA. He hasn't lost since surrendering seven runs in Milwaukee back on April 24.

Norris has faced the Rockies twice, but has pitched to a 4.50 ERA against them without recording a decision.

Colorado will counter with righty Jeremy Guthrie, who is 2-3 with a 5.31 ERA. Guthrie allowed six runs for the second straight start on Saturday in a loss against Cincinnati, although only two were earned.

He beat the Astros back on April 6, yielding three runs and four hits in seven innings.

Colorado beat the Astros for the third straight time on Wednesday, as Carlos Gonzalez smacked three of the Rockies' three home runs in a 13-5 win.

"He's in a different place right now," Rockies manager Jim Tracy said. "He's in a place where you never thought you'd see him be. He's stepping to just another level."

Michael Cuddyer hit his second grand slam of the season in the first inning. Dexter Fowler added a three-run homer for the Rockies, who have won five of their last seven.

Despite allowing five runs on 11 hits in six innings, Christian Friedrich (3-1) picked up the win for Colorado.

"His only mulligan was in the third inning when he started getting behind in the count," Tracy said. "When you get yourself in that position, [hitters] become a lot more [selective]. I really like the way he rebounded."

Lucas Harrell (4-4) struggled for the Astros, surrendering nine runs in five- plus innings, and giving up 10 hits and three walks.

"We allowed five home runs with the first one being a grand slam," Astros manager Brad Mills said. "We battled back, we got some hits, but they got five homers."

Houston has now lost six in a row at Coors Field, its longest skid in Denver since dropping all seven at Mile High Stadium to the expansion Rockies in 1993.
