Detroit's Verlander bounces back from shaky first
Mar 25th 2012, 19:46

LAKELAND, Fla. –  Justin Verlander overcame a rocky first and pitched six solid innings in his next-to-last start of spring training Sunday as the Tigers beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-3 in a split-squad game.

The 2011 AL Cy Young winner and MVP, allowed four hits — and two runs — to the first five Phillies, then retired 15 of the next 18 batters, allowing just three infield singles after the first inning.

For the day, Verlander gave up seven hits and two runs with three strikeouts and no walks.

Hunter Pence singled home a run for the Phillies in the first, then scored on an RBI double by Ty Wigginton.

Scott Elarton, who hasn't pitched in the majors since 2008 and was out of baseball completely in 2011, started for the Phillies allowing two hits and one run in four innings. Elarton, a non-roster invitee, is competing for a spot in the Phillies' bullpen.
