Key Biscayne, FL – Reigning champion Novak Djokovic and American star Mardy Fish posted third-round victories Monday at the $3.973 million Sony Ericsson Open.
The world No. 1 Djokovic handled 27th-seeded fellow Serb Viktor Troicki 6-3, 6-4 in 1 hour, 25 minutes. Troicki could manage only one break, compared to three for the high-flying Djokovic.
Djokovic beat Rafael Nadal in last year's marquee finale, also titled here in 2007, and was the Miami runner-up in 2009. He'll face nifty Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the round of 16.
The eighth-seeded Fish, meanwhile, handled 28th-seeded South African Kevin Anderson 6-4, 6-3 in just over an hour-and-a-half at Crandon Park. Fish tallied four service breaks, while the former University of Illinois star Anderson could mange only one break on Day 6 of this ATP Masters event.
Next up for Fish will be 12th seed Nicolas Almagro, who rolled past 20th- seeded fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-4.
Fifth-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer grounded 30th-seeded Frenchman Julien Benneteau 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, while another third-round result saw a 17th-seeded Gasquet outlast Spain's Albert Ramos, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3.
Monday's schedule also features the likes of former top-ranked great Roger Federer and former U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro. The two-time Miami winner Federer is fresh off his Masters title at Indian Wells two weeks ago.
The third-seeded Federer's Monday night opponent will be 31st-seeded fellow two-time Miami titlist Andy Roddick. The Swiss icon is a one-sided 21-2 lifetime against the former No. 1 Roddick, including a 1-1 mark at this tournament.
Federer and the three-time Miami runner-up Nadal are the all-time leaders with 19 Masters titles apiece.
The 2012 Miami champion will collect $659,775.
