Former Giants OC Erhardt dies at 80 Mar 21st 2012, 22:42 East Rutherford, NJ –  Ron Erhardt, a former NFL head coach and offensive coordinator of the New York Giants for two Super Bowl titles, has died. He was 80. The Giants said Erhardt, who was on their staff from 1982-91, died Wednesday morning in Boca Raton, Florida. Hired by Ray Perkins, Erhardt stayed with the Giants after Perkins left to coach at the University of Alabama and remained offensive coordinator under Bill Parcells. During their eight seasons together, the Giants made the playoffs five times, won three NFC East titles and captured Super Bowls XXI and XXV. "Ron was a wonderful man and a great coach," Giants president and CEO John Mara said in a statement. "He was a big part of our success in the 1980s and was an important contributor to our first two Super Bowl championships." Erhardt was head coach of the New England Patriots from 1978-81 -- Parcells served under him as linebackers coach in 1980 -- and was offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers for four seasons after leaving the Giants, helping them reach a Super Bowl. His last job in the NFL was as offensive coordinator of the New York Jets in 1996. Current Giants head coach Tom Coughlin was the team's wide receivers coach from 1988-90 and said he sent Erhardt a note at the end of the season for his 80th birthday. "We're all saddened by the unexpected news of Ron's death," Coughlin said in a statement.
