Owner considers changes to Bristol Motor Speedway
Mar 19th 2012, 19:31

BRISTOL, Tenn. –  Bristol Motor Speedway owner Bruton Smith says he began contemplating changing his Tennessee track immediately after Sunday night's NASCAR race.

But Smith doesn't believe Sunday's poor attendance was related to fans' displeasure with the current style of racing.

Bristol once was one of the toughest tickets in all of professional sports, but attendance has waned at the facility the past several years. The spring race has particularly suffered.

The speedway claims it seats 160,000, and although the grandstands appeared half full, NASCAR's listed attendance Sunday was 102,000.

Many fans have grumbled Bristol lost its luster after a 2007 reconfiguration project. Smith says he'll work with engineers this week to determine if the progressive banking needs to be removed.

But he says the weather, not the racing, kept fans away Sunday.
