Key Biscayne, FL – Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams moved round loser.
The second-seeded Sharapova handled American qualifier Sloane Stephens 6-4, 6-2. A three-time runner-up at Miami (2005-06, 2011), Sharapova will face fellow Russian Ekaterina Makarova in the fourth round. Makarova advanced with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over German Mona Barthel.
Williams, seeded 10th, had little trouble in her match against 21st-seeded Italian Roberta Vinci, as the veteran American needed just 67 minutes to emerge a 6-2, 6-1 winner. It has been smooth sailing thus far for the five- time Miami champ, as she returned from a seven-week absence on Thursday with a 6-2, 6-3 win over China's Zhang Shuai in the second round.
Up next for Williams will be the winner between sixth-seeded Australian Samantha Stosur and South Africa's Chanelle Scheepers.
Clijsters, meanwhile, dropped a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) decision to fellow Belgian Yanina Wickmayer, the tournament's 23rd seed.
Wickmayer's fourth-round opponent will be either former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki or 29th-seeded Czech Petra Cetkovska.
Li Na of China, the eighth seed, dismissed Czech Iveta Benesova 7-5, 6-2 to set up a fourth-round match with Sabine Lisicki. The 12th-seeded German notched a 6-4, 7-5 victory over China's Peng Shuai.
