UAB hires UNC assistant Haase as head coach
Mar 27th 2012, 01:03

Birmingham, AL –  UAB hired former North Carolina assistant Jerod Haase as its new head basketball coach, bringing on board a staple of Roy Williams' Tar Heels staff known as a top recruiter.

The move was announced Monday and comes less than two weeks after UAB fired Mike Davis after six seasons as head coach.

Haase, who turns 38 on Sunday, has spent 13 years with Williams at Kansas and North Carolina, including the last nine at powerhouse UNC, where he helped the Tar Heels win two national championships.

A former player, Haase scored 1,264 points at Kansas and was a candidate for the Naismith and Wooden Awards.

After Davis was fired, athletic director Brian Mackin said one of the reasons was that UAB was seeing a growing apathy in its fan base and a decrease in attendance and ticket revenue.

UAB finished 15-16 this past season, including 9-7 in Conference USA, and missed the postseason for just the second time in Davis' six years. The Blazers earned an NCAA Tournament appearance last season after three straight NIT berths.

Davis, who had one year remaining on his contract, posted a record of 122-73 and guided UAB to four straight 20-win seasons before this year's struggles.
