BRIDGEPORT, Conn. –  Troy Grosenick made 20 saves and Union won its first Division I hockey tournament game, beating Michigan State 3-1 in the first round of the East Regional on Friday.

The top-seeded Dutchmen (25-7-7) scored in each of the first two periods for a 2-0 lead, and Grosenick took care of the rest.

Union advances to play the winner of No. 2 Miami (Ohio) University and No. 3 UMass-Lowell on Saturday.

"Our team has been awesome in front of the net all year," Grosenick said. "All the credit goes to the guys out in front of me. Seeing only 20-something shots made my job easier."

Max Novak scored at 15:09 of the first period to give Union a 1-0 lead. Novak skated in on Will Yanakeff on the rush off the left wing and beat him high on the block side.

Michigan State (19-16-4) had a chance to tie it at 18:42 of the first, but referee Derek Shepherd waved off the goal after a scrum into front of the Union net resulted in the puck going in. After watching the replay, the call stood because the net was dislodged.

Jeremy Welsh added an even-strength goal at 3:20 of the second. Mat Bodie assisted on the play.

"We never panicked on the bench and we never felt we were going to lose the game," Welsh said.

Matt Berry scored for Michigan State (19-16-4) at 19:21 of the second. Yanakeff had 29 saves.

"We lost to a very good team," Michigan State coach Tom Anastos said. "The difference was they took advantage of some mistakes we made."

Union's Wayne Simpson scored a power-play goal at 18:42 of the third. Kelly Zajac was credited with the assist.
