Red Sox's Carpenter to undergo surgery
Mar 28th 2012, 22:06

Fort Myers, FL –  Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Chris Carpenter will undergo surgery on Thursday.

"Headed into surgery tomorrow with Dr [James] Andrews to remove a bone spur in my elbow," the righty wrote on his Twitter account.

Carpenter was sent to Boston from Chicago in the offseason as compensation for the Cubs' hiring of former Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein.

The 26-year-old Carpenter made his MLB debut with the Cubs in 2011, posting a 2.79 earned run average over 10 relief appearances. He also combined for 32 games between Chicago's Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa clubs last year, going 3-4 with two saves and a 5.91 ERA.

He played in two games this spring before being sidelined.
