Vikings CB Allen, 24, retires from NFL
May 30th 2012, 22:40

Eden Prairie, MN –  Minnesota Vikings cornerback Asher Allen has decided to retire from the NFL at the age of 24.

Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier said Wednesday that he was surprised by the decision.

"I didn't see that coming," the coach said. "Everybody has to make decisions that they think are best for them."

Frazier said Allen, a third-round pick in 2009, told him last Thursday that he was planning to retire.

Allen, who has a history of concussions, didn't say if his decision was health related.

"He would have been one of the corners fighting for a spot just like the other guys are," said Frazier. "His experience would have helped us but he's made a decision that he thinks is best for he and his family and you have to respect that."

Allen played 12 games last season, starting nine, and racked up 49 tackles and an interception. He had 134 tackles and four interceptions in three seasons for the Vikings since being drafted out of Georgia.
