Austrian govt to boycott Euro matches in Ukraine
May 2nd 2012, 13:47

VIENNA –  Austria's foreign minister says government officials will boycott Euro 2012 games played in Ukraine to protest the nation's treatment of its jailed former premier, Yulia Tymoshenko.

Minister Michael Spindelegger said Wednesday the decision is "our sign of solidarity" with Tymoshenko.

EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has said he will not go to Ukraine during the June 8-July 1 European football championships unless the human rights situation there swiftly improves.

EU Justice Commissioner Vivian Reding is skipping the opening ceremonies, and Germany's chancellor is reportedly considering a boycott by her government members.

Tymoshenko is serving a seven-year jail sentence in a case the West has called politically motivated, and she is on a hunger strike to protest alleged abuse in a Ukraine prison.
