Sao Paulo, Brazil –  Corinthians may have won the Brasileiro last season, but the club sustained its second straight defeat on Sunday to open the new campaign, losing 1-0 at Atletico Mineiro.

The result leaves Corinthians second from the bottom, with the team having failed to score in either of its defeats.

Sunday's match at Mineiro was scoreless at halftime, but Danilinho broke the deadlock for the hosts with a goal in the 64th minute. Corinthians had Fabio Santos sent off seven minutes from time, while Atletico also ended the contest with 10 men after Andre Felipe saw red.

While Corinthians has stumbled out of the gate, Botafogo has flourished so far, winning its second straight match with two goals from Lucas in a 3-2 win at Coritiba.

Botafogo sits atop the league having scored seven goals in its two wins, while the club is joined on six points by Mineiro and Vasco da Gama, which secured a 1-0 win at Portuguesa courtesy of Alecsandro's first-half goal.

Saturday also saw Internacional came from two goals down in the second half to claim a 3-3 draw at Flamengo as Fabricio and Jesus Datolo both scored in the final 25 minutes to level the contest for the visiting side.

Nautico and Cruzeiro played to a 0-0 draw on Saturday and Ponte Preta split the points with Goianiense as well as Roger scored early in the second half for Ponte Preta to cancel out a first-half tally from Bida.

Sunday's other matches included Sao Paulo claiming a 1-0 home win against Bahia as Luis Fabiano scored the lone goal in the second half, Santos was held to a second successive 0-0 draw, this time by Sport Recife, while Gremio topped Palmeiras, 1-0, with Andre Lima's goal in the 71st minute separating the sides.
