Paris, France – Spain's David Ferrer and Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia were among the early winners Tuesday as the first round of the 2012 French Open winds down.
The sixth-seeded Ferrer eased past Slovakia's Lukas Lacko, 6-3, 6-4, 6-1, while the eighth-seeded Tipsarevic recovered from a poor first set and posted a 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 victory over American Sam Querrey.
A minor upset saw Sergiy Stakhovsky capture a five-set battle with fellow Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov, topping the 16th seed 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-3.
Also, Dmitry Tursunov of Russia downed Japan's Go Saeda in straight sets, while Argentina's Eduardo Schwank took out big-serving Croat Ivo Karlovic in three. Germany's Florian Mayer, the 32nd seed, did the same against Spain's Daniel Gimeno-Traver.
Later Tuesday, two-time defending champion Rafael Nadal begins his quest for a seventh French championship against Italy's Simone Bolelli. Fourth-seeded Andy Murray is also scheduled for action against Japan's Tatsuma Ito.
