Mexico soccer vs politics spat getting ugly
May 1st 2012, 21:00

MEXICO CITY –  Mexico's scheduling conflict between a presidential candidates' debate and a soccer quarterfinals match is growing ugly amid accusations of conspiracy and authoritarianism.

Electoral authorities planned weeks ago to hold the debate at 8 p.m. this Sunday. Then on Monday, Mexico's soccer federation announced it will hold a quarterfinals match between Tigres and Morelia at the same time.

On Tuesday, the head of Mexico's electoral institute condemned one TV network's decision to broadcast the soccer game and not the debate.

The network owner has responded with a tweet saying the game will get higher ratings and calling critics "authoritarian."

Leftist candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, meanwhile, says TV networks are showing they favor the front-runner, Enrique Pena Nieto. He says Pena Nieto has the least to gain from a debate.
