Los Angeles, CA –  A. J. Burnett worked 5 1/3 scoreless innings and the Pittsburgh bullpen took care of the rest as the Pirates slipped past the Cubs, 1-0, dealing Chicago its 10th straight loss. It's longest streak of futility for the Cubs since they lost the first 14 games of the 1997 season. Burnett (3-2) scattered six hits and walked two while striking out six to earn the victory in the opener of this three-game set. Jared Hughes, Jason Grilli, Juan Cruz and Joel Hanrahan combined to complete the shutout for the Pirates, who had lost three of their last four coming in. Rod Barajas finished 2-for-4 and knocked in the only run of the game. Ryan Dempster (0-3) pitched well in defeat, allowing just the one run on seven hits and one walk over 7 1/3 innings. He struck out six in the loss, which extended his personal winless streak to 17 games. Starlin Castro, Darwin Barney and Joe Mather all had two hits for the Cubs, who did manage 10 hits overall, but failed to produce in the clutch by going 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

Final Score: New York 6, San Diego 1

Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - Dillon Gee tossed seven innings of one-run ball to lead the New York Mets past the San Diego Padres, 6-1, in the second installment of a four-game series at Citi Field. Gee (4-3) scattered four hits and three walks while striking out a career-high nine batters in New York's fourth win in six games. Lucas Duda had a home run and scored twice, and Ike Davis added two RBI for the Mets. Anthony Bass (2-5) allowed six runs on eight hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings to suffer the loss. Jesus Guzman knocked in the lone run for the Padres, who dropped their fourth decision in five games.

Final Score: Miami 7, San Francisco 6

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Josh Johnson is slowly but surely regaining his former dominant self, while Tim Lincecum has yet to find his Cy-Young form. Chris Coghlan drilled a three-run shot as part of a five-run sixth inning and Giancarlo Stanton smacked his 10th homer of the month as the Miami Marlins hung on for a 7-6 win over the San Francisco Giants in the second installment of a four-game set. Johnson, who allowed two runs or fewer in his prior three starts, surrendered three runs on nine hits and a walk in five frames. He's lowered his ERA from 6.61 on May 4 to 4.87. Stanton had two hits, two RBI and a pair of runs scored for Miami, which recorded its franchise-record 17th win in May. Steve Chisek picked up his first save of the season after Heath Bell gave up two runs on three hits in one-third of an inning before being lifted. Dan Jennings (1-0) picked up the win with a 1-2-3 sixth frame. Lincecum (2-5) was charged with six runs on six hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings. His ERA has ballooned to 6.41 on the year.

Rafael Betancourt picked up his eighth save of the season after throwing a perfect ninth. Todd Frazier drove in a pair of runs and Ryan Ludwick had an RBI double for the Reds, who had a six-game winning streak halted. Joey Votto went 4-for-4 with two doubles. Johnny Cueto (5-2) was pegged with the loss after giving up five runs on 11 hits over 4 2/3.

Final Score: Washington 7, Atlanta 4

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Ryan Zimmerman broke the game open with a three-run double in the seventh inning and Washington beat Atlanta, 7-4, in a battle between the top two teams in the National League East. Ian Desmond had a two-run single and Rick Ankiel smacked a two-run triple, both in the first inning, for the division-leading Nationals, who won for the fourth time in five contests. All of Washington's runs came with two outs. Ross Detwiler allowed five hits and three runs while fanning five and walking four over 4 1/3 innings in the start. Chien-Ming Wang (1-0), who made his season debut after been reinstated from the disabled list on Tuesday, pitched three innings to get the win. Lee, who hasn't registered a win in seven starts, fanned seven and surrendered three runs on eight hits and three walks in seven innings. He is 0-2, but maintains a sparkling 2.82 ERA. Offensive ineptitude has hurt Lee as the Phillies have recorded just 12 total runs while Lee is in the game. Jonathan Papelbon registered his 14th save in 14 opportunities with a 1-2-3 10th frame for Philadelphia, which has won three straight on the heels of a four-game losing streak. Rafael Furcal hit a solo shot for the Cardinals, who have lost six of their last nine contests.

Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Yovani Gallardo tossed 7 1/3 strong innings of one-run ball and the Milwaukee Brewers knocked off the Arizona Diamondbacks, 7-1, in the opener of a three-game set at Chase Field. Francisco Rodriguez got the final two outs in the eighth thanks to a double play ball, and Jose Veras battled some wildness in the ninth, but turned away the Diamondbacks.
