Estoril, Portugal –  Top-seeded Roberta Vinci eased into the quarterfinals, while second-seeded Russian Maria Kirilenko and defending champion Anabel Medina Garrigues were second-round losers Wednesday at the $220,000 Estoril Open tennis event.

The Italian Vinci whipped Portuguese wild card Maria Joao Koehler 6-2, 6-0 in 59 minutes at National Stadium. Vinci's quarterfinal opponent on Thursday will be seventh-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova, who was leading Jarmila Gajdosova 7-6 (7-2) after one set when the Aussie retired on Day 3.

Meanwhile, another Italian, Karin Knapp, cut down the 2008 Estoril titlist Kirilenko 1-6, 6-1, 7-5 and Silvia Soler-Espinosa upended her third-seeded fellow Spaniard Medina Garrigues 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. Medina Garrigues bested Kristina Barrois in last year's finale and also downed the German here on Tuesday.

Fourth-seeded Czech Petra Cetkovska drilled British qualifier Heather Watson 6-3, 6-1, while sixth-seeded Estonian Kaia Kanepi whipped American Vania King 6-3, 6-4.

Additional upsets came when Kazakhstan's Galina Voskoboeva knocked out fifth- seeded Chinese Zheng Jie 6-4, 6-1 and Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro erased ninth-seeded Slovenian Polona Hercog 6-4, 3-0, retired. Zheng was the Estoril champion back in 2006.

Thursday's other quarters will pit Cetkovska against Kanepi, Suarez Navarro versus Soler-Espinosa and Voskoboeva against the qualifier Knapp.

The winner of this clay-court French Open tune-up will take home $37,000.
