Jun 5th 2012, 02:36

Los Angeles, CA –  Jason Heyward ripped the go-ahead two-run single in the fifth inning and the Atlanta Braves edged the Washington Nationals, 3-2, in the finale of a rain-shortened two-game series on Sunday. Dan Uggla laced an RBI double, while Michael Bourn and Martin Prado added two hits apiece for the Braves, who have won three of their last four games. Tommy Hanson (6-4) allowed two solo homers in the first inning, but nothing else as he scattered six hits and fanned six without walking a batter over seven frames to earn the win. Eric O'Flaherty worked a scoreless eighth and Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the ninth -- touching triple digits on the radar gun along the way -- to nail down his 16th save of the season. Steve Lombardozzi and Bryce Harper crushed solo homers for the Nats, losers in four of their last five contests. On the day when Gio Gonzalez (7-2) learned he was named the National League Pitcher of the Month, he wasn't sharp on the mound, allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks. He also struck out five in defeat.

Final Score: Miami 5, Philadelphia 1

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Carlos Zambrano pitched into the eighth inning while adding two hits, including a home run, and scoring twice as the Miami Marlins defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-1, on Sunday. Zambrano (4-3) allowed one run on four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts through 7 2/3 innings in Miami's seventh win in nine games. Jose Reyes had a two-run double while Hanley Ramirez homered in the victory. Joe Blanton (4-6) was touched for five runs on nine hits and a walk in six-plus innings for the Phillies, who dropped the last two portions of this three-game set.

Final Score: Houston 5, Cincinnati 3

Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Justin Maxwell hit a pinch-hit two-run homer while Jason Castro and Marwin Gonzalez each had two hits and a RBI to lead the Houston Astros to a 5-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds in the finale of a three- game set at Minute Maid Park. Jordan Schafer also drove in a run for the Astros, who halted an eight-game skid. Jordan Lyles (1-1) gave up two runs on five hits and struck out three over seven frames to earn the win. Brett Myers tossed a perfect ninth to pick up his 13th save of the season. Zack Cozart hit a two-run homer and Joey Votto drove in a run for the Reds, who completed a six-game road trip with a 3-3 record. Bronson Arroyo (2-4) was pegged with the loss after giving up five runs on eight hits over 6 1/3 innings.

Final Score: Pittsburgh 6, Milwaukee 5

Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Andrew McCutchen clubbed the go-ahead two-run homer during a three-run fifth inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates slipped past the Milwaukee Brewers, 6-5, in the finale of a three-game set. Clint Barmes delivered a solo home run and added an RBI single, while Rod Barajas and Garrett Jones also roped solo shots for the Pirates, winners in three of their last four contests. James McDonald (5-2) contributed a base hit offensively and was solid on the mound, allowing three runs -- one earned -- on four hits and one walk to go with eight strikeouts over six innings to collect the win. Joel Hanrahan allowed a solo homer in the ninth, but settled down to record his 14th save. Nyjer Morgan, Brooks Conrad and Martin Maldonado hit solo homers, while Rickie Weeks and Taylor Green knocked in runs for the Brewers, who dropped two of three in this weekends after completing a four-game sweep of the Dodgers earlier in the week. Michael Fiers (1-1) allowed four runs on eight hits and a walk over five innings to take the loss. He struck out eight hitters.

Final Score: Colorado 3, Los Angeles 2

Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Alex White pitched into the seventh and gave up two runs on two hits to guide the Colorado Rockies past the Los Angeles Dodgers, 3-2, in the finale of a three-game set at Coors Field. White (2-3) struck out two and walked five over 6 2/3 frames while the Rockies bullpen combined for 2 1/3 shutout innings. Rafael Betancourt tossed a perfect ninth to pick up his 10th save of the season. Jordan Pacheco, Todd Helton and Marco Scutaro each drove in a run for Colorado, which has won six of its last seven. Nathan Eovaldi (0-2) was pegged with the loss after giving up three runs -- two earned -- on five hits over 5 2/3 innings. A.J. Ellis hit a two-run homer for the Dodgers, losers in six of their last seven.

Final Score: San Francisco 2, Chicago 0

San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Barry Zito came within two outs of throwing his second shutout of the season Sunday and the Giants beat the Cubs for the third day in a row, 2-0. Pitching a gem, Zito came out only after giving up a one-out walk to Darwin Barney in the ninth inning. Sergio Romo retired the last two batters to lock down his second save and San Francisco's sixth win in seven games. Zito (5-2) allowed just four hits and two walks, striking out five in another good performance by a Giants starting pitcher. The team also won the first two games of the four-game series behind stellar outings by Madison Bumgarner and Matt Cain. Chicago starter Travis Wood, meanwhile, was an unlucky loser. Wood (0-2) was perfect through three innings and didn't surrender a hit until the fifth, when the Giants scored their first run. The 25-year-old lefty went seven innings, giving up just three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. Both teams had just four hits, but the Cubs saw their road losing streak reach 10 games.

Final Score: Arizona 6, San Diego 0

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Trevor Cahill tossed his second career shutout, Miguel Montero and Gerardo Parra both hit a two-run homer and the Diamondbacks defeated the Padres, 6-0, in the finale of a three-game series. Cahill (3-5) allowed six hits, walked three and struck out five to earn up his first win since May 1. He was 0-3 in his previous five starts. Paul Goldschmidt hit his second homer in as many days for Arizona, which has won three of four, including the last two games of this series. Eric Stults (1-2) took the loss, giving up six runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings.

Final Score: New York 6, St. Louis 1

Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - Jon Niese went six scoreless innings and the Mets defeated the Cardinals, 6-1, on Sunday. Niese (4-2) allowed six hits, set a career-high with 10 strikeouts, and continued a stellar series for the Mets starting rotation. Johan Santana set the pace in the opener, tossing the first no-hitter in club history and R.A. Dickey followed with a seven-hit shutout on Saturday. On Sunday, Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit a two-run homer and drove in three while Andres Torres added a two-run triple for the New York, which has won seven of its last nine games, including the first three of this four-game series. Jake Westbrook (4-5) gave up five runs on nine hits in five-plus innings and Adron Chambers had an RBI single in the eighth for the Cardinals, losers of five straight and eight of 10.
